Volunteering at Databanken
Databanken’s volunteers range from technical experts to hobbyists and come from many cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Duties
- Recycling electronic equipment
- Supporting welfare and community-based organisations
- Helping to provide access to computing for people on low incomes
We use open-source software on all our computers rather than Windows, as we are committed to free and open-source technology.
Volunteer Commitment
To be a volunteer at Databanken:
- You must commit to at least one shift per fortnight.
- You should be comfortable working in a team environment.
- Volunteers are expected to log in regularly to sign up for shifts and check for updates.
- Housekeeping is a shared responsibility to keep workspaces clean.

Front Desk & Customer Service
A great way to gain IT retail experience!
Duties
- Assist customers in-store and over the phone.
- Explain Databanken low-cost Linux computers.
- Help with administrative tasks.
Volunteer Requirements
- Comfortable working with Linux desktops
- Willing to learn Databanken’s custom Linux distribution.
Technical/Buildroom & Warehouse
We build and refurbish reliable computers following strict quality control.
Duties
- Assemble and test refurbished computers.
- Wipe & sanitise hard drives.
- Recycle broken components properly.
Volunteer Requirements
- Familiarity with GNOME, MATE, and Linux is essential.
- Basic command-line skills (e.g., navigating files, checking system status).
- Familiarity with hardware is a plus.
